At present a number of producers are utilising laboratories outside the province for the testing of their products.
AIM member Entecom has a sister company called Food Chain Laboratories (FCL) which potentially could service the testing needs of the regional market. In the previous quarter, AIM and DEDEAT met with FCL to assess their capability and capacity, given the importance of food safety as a requirement to meet the supplier requirement standards of international and retail markets.
Janice Giddy, the founder of Entecom and FCL was offered a seat at the board and has accepted the position. In this quarter, AIM hosted an education and awareness session with FCL and fresh food producers to discuss R638 and its impact on food safety.
Furthermore, AIM members, Entecom and Rand International Capital have formed an agreement to fund and conduct the feasibility study.
